Martin Kearney

My name is Martin Kearney, I am the third son of the late John and Rosemary. I live with my wife Grace (O’Kane) in ‘Tigh-na-Banna’, Glenone. My father and mother bought this home at the time of their marriage in 1943. Grace and I extensively renovated the house in 1985. It is with great sadness that I write this piece as my mother Rosemary passed away three weeks today at the advanced age of 91 years. She would have very much liked to have been part of this Re-union.

I retired from teaching after 33 years in June 2007, 20 of those years as Principal of St. Mary’s P.S. Harryville, Ballymena. Sadly St. Mary’s closed in June 2007 as part of a Parish Schools’ Rationalisation Scheme. I have very fond memories of my school, although the last ten years in particular were difficult due to local and national community tensions, which have been well documented. I have often described it as ‘the best of times, the worst of times.’

My wife Grace has also retired from teaching French after 32 years, firstly in Our Lady’s Secondary, Cookstown (3 years) and then moving after her marriage to St. Louis Grammar School, Ballymena (29 years). Likewise she enjoyed her teaching career and is now enjoying a well-earned retirement.

We have four children, Oliver, Gráinne, Eoghan and Peter, only Peter resides with us from time to time. The once busy house with seven of a family has now been reduced to two.

Oliver, the eldest, graduated from Queen’s University in Pharmacy in 1998 and joined the Lloyds Group. He now manages our of their stores in Irlam, and recently bought a house in Stockport. He remains a lifelong Liverpool F.C. supporter. [email protected]

Gráinne, our only daughter, graduated from Queen’s University in Medicine in 2003. She has recently completed her General Practice Training and is currently working as a locum in the greater Belfast area. She married Peter Quinn, a fellow doctor, in March 2006 and set up home in Dunmurry. They are expecting their first child in November, something we are all looking forward to. [email protected]

Eoghan, the second boy, also graduated from Queen’s University in 2004 in Geography and completed his Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Manchester Metropolitan University. He has recently been appointed to the Staff of Lowtown Community School in Manchester and lives in Didsbury, a suburb of Manchester. He is a big Celtic supporter. [email protected]

Peter, our youngest, has just completed Year Three of the Bachelor of Education at St. Mary’s University College and is preparing to travel to Boston, U.S.A. for the summer as part of the Wide Horizons Programme, a cross-Border Teaching Initiative, so sadly he will miss the Re-union.
